• ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL WILL BEGIN IN
CASEY U.M.C. AT 9:30 A.M.
• Some congregations will focus on the second
week in “The Season of Creation.”

In this realm, today is “Fauna Sunday.”
Fauna refers to the all the living species on our
planet Earth — in the wild, in our lives and in
our soils.  We are, in fact, a family of fauna—
both biologically and spiritually.  The creatures
of Earth are our kin.  We have all emerged from
Earth and, at the end of our earthly lives, our
bodies return to the Earth.  All living things are
animated by the very breath/spirit of God.  In
Genesis One, all living species emerge from the
Earth who is their common mother.  This is not
to suggest that it happened over night, but that
it happened here on Mother Earth.

We acknowledge animals and plants that exist
all around the world — some native to ice sheets
and icebergs — some at home in the heat and
sand of the desert.  We have a plethora of plants,
organisms and animals that live on mountains,
on the wide plains, and deep in the oceans.  We
must note that many species go extinct every
year — from natural causes or from our own lack
of proper management.  The loss or survival of a
given species is a family matter.
It is also appropriate to incorporate traditions
from Indigenous peoples, many of whom have a
rich spiritual kinship with the animal world, and
share a common spirit with their totem (symbol
serving as an emblem of one group, family, or
clan of people and the land where they live.
Totem-like beliefs have been historically present
for thousands of years in societies throughout
much of the world.  Totemic cultures in North
America are estimated to have been here more
than 10,000 years.

A FEW PERFECT CREATION SONGS
LEAP TO MIND —
“ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL - 147”

“FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH - 92”

“I AM YOUR MOTHER” - 2059
 (From The Faith We Sing)

POEM FOR FAUNA SUNDAY
“SONG OF THE WILD”
Will you come back with Me to the birth of the
Earth,
Before all its life forms evolved?
Will you sing with the heavens amazed at the
sight:
A planet with secrets to unfold?

Will you praise,
Be amazed
With eyes as wide as a child’s?
Will you praise,
Be amazed
And sing
The song of the wild?

Will you walk home with Me on the way to the
wild
And watch baby birds break from their shells?

Do you know how I serve as a mid-wife to all,
The lion, lizard and gazelle?

Will you gather with Me as the wading birds
dance,

Preparing to migrate once more?
Can you fathom the code I have fixed in their
souls
To navigate oceans that roar?

Will you sleep with your God in the desert one
night
And wake with creatures in the sand?

Can you fathom the wisdom instilled in the mind
To live without water, or man?

If you don’t feel at home with the rain forest
snakes,
If you’re troubled when creatures change their
skin,

Then surrender the claim that you rule this Earth
And discover creation as your kin.

SCRIPTURE READINGS———————————————————————
JEREMIAH 18:1-11
THE MESSAGE (MSG)

At the potter's house: "Look, I am a potter
shaping evil against you. ... Turn now, all of you
from your evil way, and amend your ways and
your doings."  A misunderstanding is that
judgment is about anger or destruction in
response to the anger. Is a potter angry at the
clay or the pot being formed? No. The potter
simply sees this clay in this formation cannot
make a usable pot, — so he ended the current
project, started over, and reshaped the clay into
a pot that would work.
We are called to watch over one another in love.
Both God and man constantly seek restoration
and fullness of life as an important goal.
TO WORSHIP THE BIG LIE
1-2 God told Jeremiah, "Up on your feet! Go to
the potter's house. When you get there, I'll tell
you what I have to say."
3-4 So I went to the potter's house, and sure
enough, the potter was there, working away at
his wheel.
Whenever the pot the potter was working on
turned out badly, as sometimes happens when
you are working with clay, the potter would
simply start over and use the same clay to
make another pot.
5-10 Then God's Message came to me: "Can't I
do just as this potter does, people of Israel?"
God's Decree! "Watch this potter. In the same
way that this potter works his clay, I work on
you, people of Israel. At any moment I may
decide to pull up a people or a country by the
roots and get rid of them. But if they repent of
their wicked lives, I will think twice and start
over with them. At another time I might decide
to plant a people or country, but if they don't co-
operate and won't listen to me, I will think again
and give up on the plans I had for them.

11"So, tell the people of Judah and citizens of
Jerusalem my Message: 'Danger! I'm shaping
doom against you, laying plans against you.
Turn back from your doomed way of life.
Straighten out your lives.'

PSALM 139:1-18 (UMH 854)
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
God knows us completely, inside and out. Thus
God can both judge us and show mercy toward
us when we repent.
A PSALM OF DAVID

1-6 God, investigate my life; get all the facts
   firsthand.
   I'm an open book to you;
even from a distance, you know what I'm
   thinking.
   You know when I leave and when I get back;
I'm never out of your sight.
You know everything I'm going to say
before I start the first sentence.
I look behind me and you're there,
then up ahead and you're there, too—
      your reassuring presence, coming and
   going.
This is too much, too wonderful—
I can't take it all in!

7-12 Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your
   Spirit?
to be out of your sight?
If I climb to the sky, you're there!
If I go underground, you're there!
If I flew on morning's wings
      to the far western horizon,
You'd find me in a minute—
      you're already there waiting!
Then I said to myself, "Oh, he even sees me in
   the dark!
At night I'm immersed in the light!"
   It's a fact: darkness isn't dark to you;
night and day, darkness and light, they're all
   the same to you.

13-16 Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then
   out;
you formed me in my mother's womb.
I thank you, High God—you're breathtaking!
Body and soul, I am marvelously made!
      I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out,
      you know every bone in my body;
You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit,
how I was sculpted from nothing into
   something.
Like an open book, you watched me grow
   from conception to birth;
all the stages of my life were spread out
   before you,
The days of my life all prepared
before I'd even lived one day.

17-22 Your thoughts—how rare, how beautiful!
      God, I'll never comprehend them!
I couldn't even begin to count them—
any more than I could count the sand of the
   sea.
Oh, let me rise in the morning and live always
   with you!
And please, God, do away with wickedness
   for good!
   And you murderers—out of here!—
all the men and women who belittle you, God,
      infatuated with cheap god-imitations.
See how I hate those who hate you, God,
      see how I loathe all this godless arrogance;
I hate it with pure, unadulterated hatred.
      Your enemies are my enemies!

PHILEMON 1-21
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
Paul writes to persuade slaveholder, Philemon
to emancipate his slave, Onesimus.
Paul is dictating a letter, someone is writing
down what he is writing. Perhaps Onesimus is
the scribe, or perhaps, and this may be more
likely, Onesimus is outdoors, within full view of
Paul as he dictates this letter.

Paul maybe writes in a few lines (verses 19-21),
and then concludes with a final bit of dictation
(vs 22-25).
1-3 I, Paul, am a prisoner for the sake of Christ,
here with my brother Timothy. I write this letter
to you, Philemon, my good friend and companion
in this work—also to our sister Apphia, to
Archippus, a real trooper, and to the church that
meets in your house. God's best to you! Christ's
blessings on you!

4-7 Every time your name comes up in my
prayers, I say, "Oh, thank you, God!" I keep
hearing of the love and faith you have for the
Master Jesus, which brims over to other
believers. And I keep praying that this faith we
hold in common keeps showing up in the good
things we do, and that people recognize Christ
in all of it. Friend, you have no idea how good
your love makes me feel, doubly so when I see
your hospitality to fellow believers.
TO CALL THE SLAVE YOUR FRIEND
8-9
In line with all this I have a favor to ask of
you. As Christ's ambassador and now a prisoner
for him, I wouldn't hesitate to command this if I
thought it necessary, but I'd rather make it a
personal request.

10-14
While here in jail, I've fathered a child, so
to speak. And here he is, hand-carrying this
letter—Onesimus! He was useless to you before;
now he's useful to both of us. I'm sending him
back to you, but it feels like I'm cutting off my
right arm in doing so. I wanted in the worst way
to keep him here as your stand-in to help out
while I'm in jail for the Message. But I didn't
want to do anything behind your back, make you
do a good deed that you hadn't willingly agreed
to.

15-16 Maybe it's all for the best that you lost him
for a while. You're getting him back now for good
— and no mere slave this time, but a true
Christian brother! That's what he was to me—
he'll be even more than that to you.

17-20 So if you still consider me a comrade-in-
arms, welcome him back as you would me. If he
damaged anything or owes you anything, chalk
it up to my account. This is my personal
signature—Paul—and I stand behind it. (I don't
need to remind you, do I, that you owe your very
life to me?) Do me this big favor, friend. You'll be
doing it for Christ, but it will also do my heart
good.

21-22 I know you well enough to know you will.
You'll probably go far beyond what I've written.
And by the way, get a room ready for me.
Because of your prayers, I fully expect to be
your guest again.

23-25 Epaphras, my cellmate in the cause of
Christ, says hello. Also my coworkers Mark,
Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke. All the best to
you from the Master, Jesus Christ!

LUKE 14:25-33
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
Jesus lays out the non-negotiables for those
who want to be his disciples: give up family life,

carry the crossbar of a Roman crucifix as you
follow Jesus, and give up all your possessions.
FIGURE THE COST

25-27 One day when large groups of people were
walking along with him, Jesus turned and told
them, "Anyone who comes to me but refuses to
let go of father, mother, spouse, children,
brothers, sisters—yes, even one's own self!—
can't be my disciple. Anyone who won't shoulder
his own cross and follow behind me can't be my
disciple.
28-30 "Is there anyone here who, planning to
build a new house, doesn't first sit down and
figure the cost so you'll know if you can
complete it? If you only get the foundation laid
and then run out of money, you're going to look
pretty foolish. Everyone passing by will poke fun
at you: 'He started something he couldn't finish.'

31-32 "Or can you imagine a king going into
battle against another king without first deciding
whether it is possible with his ten thousand
troops to face the twenty thousand troops of the
other? And if he decides he can't, won't he send
an emissary and work out a truce?

33 "Simply put, if you're not willing to take what
is dearest to you, whether plans or people, and
kiss it good-bye, you can't be my disciple.

9/11: Today marks the twelfth anniversary of the
attacks on the United States.  Much has changed
in the U.S. and across the world since that day.
Increased security at airports, at borders, and
many other public venues have become a way
of life and - - - indeed - - - a welcome livelihood
for many.
U.S. soldiers are still deployed in the longest
continuous war operation in our country’s
history and will be for at least another year. The
genuine efforts at interfaith cooperation have
stepped up significantly and are beginning in
some places to make progress toward
increasing mutual understanding, collaboration,
and respect in our ever closer connection to all
world cultures.
